What was trench warfare?
Trench warfare was a new form of fighting that took place during the First World War. Soldiers on both sides dug deep ditches called trenches. Inside, they were protected from enemy machinegun fire, and could fire at the other side as they advanced, charging across the open ground between the trenches.
The main area of fighting in France and Belgium was called the Western Front, where soldiers fought from trenches.
