Why was the Suez Canal built?
|
The Suez Canal was built to shorten the sailing route from Europe to Asia. Before it opened in 1869, ships had to sail round the southern tip of Africa to reach the Indian Ocean. The canal links the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. It is 107 miles (173 km) long, and 17,000 vessels pass through it each year.
