How many African countries are there?
There are 53 independent countries on the continent of Africa. The total area of the continent is over 11.6 million sq. miles (30 million sq km), which makes it the second-largest land mass after Asia. The largest African country is Sudan, with an area of 1 million sq. miles (2.5 million sq km). It is over 200 times bigger than Gambia, Africa's smallest country. The countries with the most people are Nigeria, with over 108 million, and Egypt, which has over 59 million people. One African country lies entirely within the boundaries of another: The Kingdom of Lesotho is in the eastern part of the Republic of South Africa.
Africa is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Indian Ocean to the east, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north.
