Where was the Gold Coast?
|
The British colony of the Gold Coast, in west Africa, was established in 1874. It gained independence in 1957 and changed its name to Ghana. In the 18th century the region's Ashanti people had an independent kingdom. The gold they found in the area brought them great power. A famous golden stool was a symbol of the king and the Ashanti people. | The Ashanti king appears before his people wearing a golden crown and gold ornaments. |
