Why was the Eiffel Tower built?
The Eiffel Tower was built as a focal point for the Paris International Exposition (public exhibition) of 1889, which was held to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution. The organisers held a competition to find the best design of a tower; it was won by the French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. Unpopular at first, it has become a great attraction.
The Eiffel Tower is still the most famous landmark in Paris, France.
