What is the name of India’s holy river?
To Hindus, the Ganges River is called Ganga Mai, or 'Mother Ganges', and is sacred. Ancient Hindu writings say that the Ganges sprang from the feet of the god Vishnu. Hindus come from all over India, and beyond, to bathe in the river. They believe its waters will wash away their sins and purify their soul. They also place their relatives' ashes on the water.
On India's flag orange stands for Hinduism, green for Islam, and the wheel for Buddhism.
