Who were the first people of New Zealand?
New Zealand lies about 994 miles (1,600 km) to the southeast of Australia. Its original inhabitants were the Maori people. Historians believe that they sailed there from the Polynesian islands in the Pacific about a thousand years ago. According to a Maori legend that has been handed down, they travelled across the seas in just seven canoes. Their traditional handicraft is wood carving, and today most of their work is done for tourists. About 15 percent of New Zealand's population are Maori.
The New Zealand flag shows part of the Southern Cross on the British Blue Ensign.
