Why are kiwis endangered?
The kiwis of New Zealand are becoming scarce because the forests they live in are being chopped down, both for wood and to clear the land for development. Forest clearance is a problem for many animals and plants all over the world. The kiwi is a large, flightless bird. It lives in a burrow and comes out at night to feed on worms and insects on the damp forest floor. Kiwis have very good hearing and a very sensitive bill.
A kiwi is covered in thin feathers that look more like hair. It has no visible wings or tail.
