What is the Thames Barrier?
The Thames Barrier is a flood defence system across the River Thames to the east of central London. Building started in 1974 and took eight years to complete. When there is a flood alert from the North Sea, steel gates are raised to hold the waters back. The gates form a wall 520 metres wide.
The shell-like structures of the Thames Barrier cover the machinery that raises and lowers the gates.
