What does the heart do?
Each side of the heart has an upper and lower chamber. Blood comes into the upper chambers and is pumped out from the lower chambers.
Each side of the heart has an upper and lower chamber. Blood comes into the upper chambers and is pumped out from the lower chambers.
The heart pumps blood around the body. It is made of a special type of muscle that does not become fatigued. Each heartbeat that we feel in our chest is one complete contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle. The right side of the heart collects blood carrying waste carbon dioxide from the body, and pumps it to the lungs. The left side collects blood with fresh oxygen from the lungs and pumps it around the body.
