How do we breathe?
Beneath the lungs is a large dome of muscle called the diaphragm. This is the main muscle for breathing. When we breathe in, the diaphragm contracts, along with smaller muscles between the ribs. This makes the space inside the chest larger. Our lungs expand and air rushes into them from the windpipe. In the lungs, oxygen from the air is passed into the blood-stream. Then the diaphragm and chest muscles relax and we breathe out. Our breathing is controlled by the brain.
The windpipe runs down from the throat and branches into two tubes, called bronchi, one for each lung.
