How do we taste and smell?
The tongue is covered with thousands of taste receptors, which we call taste buds. These are grouped together in special areas on the tongue. We taste sweetness at the front, bitterness at the back, and sourness and saltiness at the sides of the tongue. When we sniff, tiny particles in the air are carried to scent receptors in the nose. Taste and smell receptors send messages to the brain.
As well as helping to detect smells, the nose moistens, cleans, and warms incoming air.
