What do the Stars and Stripes stand for?
The 50 white stars on the American flag stand for the individual states that make up the country. The seven red and six white stripes stand for the thirteen original states that made up the United States when the flag was adopted in 1777, the year after the Declaration of Independence. The first flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes. Additional stars were added as new states joined the Union.
The U.S. flag is known as the Stars and Stripes, the Star-Spangled Banner or Old Glory.
