Who founded Mexico City?
The modern capital of the Republic of Mexico was built on the ruins of the capital of the Aztec empire. According to legend, a god told the Aztec Indians to settle where they saw an eagle grasp a snake. In 1325 they saw this, and built the city of Tenochtitlan. Their city was destroyed by Spanish conquerors 200 years later.
The symbol on the Mexican flag is based on the Aztec legend of the founding of their capital city.
