Who won the race to the South Pole?
The Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole, on December 14, 1911. British explorer Robert Scott left his base camp ten days after Amundsen, and finally reached the Pole on January 17, 1912. There he found Amundsen's Norwegian flag already flying.
Amundsen journeyed to the South Pole with four men and sledges pulled by dogs.
