How cold is Antarctica?
Antarctica is the coldest of the continents. In some parts the average temperature over a whole year is as low as -58° Centigrade. Winds can reach up to 200 mph (320 kph). Nearly all the land is covered by ice, which on average is about 2,000 metres deep. Scientists think that the earth's climate is getting warmer, and there are signs that this is happening in Antarctica, where glaciers are beginning to melt more quickly.
Most of Antarctica is a vast ice sheet on top of land. The Transantarctic mountains are 2,174 miles (3,500 km) long and divide the continent in two.
