Who was the ‘Handy Man’?
Homo habilis may have used stone tools to cut up animals.
Homo habilis may have used stone tools to cut up animals.
Humans belong to the genus Homo, which means 'man'. An early species lived in east Africa nearly 2 million years ago, and was given the name Homo habilis, meaning 'handy man', because it made tools. Scientists think that it was the first creature to make tools for specific purposes, rather than simply picking up sticks and stones and using them. It made stone tools by hitting one piece of flint against another.
