What is Shinto?
Shinto means 'the way of the gods' and is the ancient religion of Japan. Each Shinto shrine has a wooden 'torii,' or 'bird-perch,' because in Japanese legend it was birdsong that persuaded the sun goddess to come out of her cave and light up the world. When Shinto began, the Japanese thought their islands were the only inhabited parts of the world.
