What does Purim celebrate?
|
This Jewish festival celebrates the rescue of Persian Jews many centuries ago from a plot to destroy them. In the 5th century BC, the prime minister of Persia, a man named Haman, ordered all Jews in the kingdom to be killed because one of the Jewish leaders had refused to bow down to him. The Jews were saved by Queen Esther, the Jewish wife of the Persian king, who persuaded her husband to overrule the order. | Children enjoy fancy-dress parades, plays, and parties at the festival of Purim. |
