Who is the saint of light?
Lucia is the Christian saint of light and brightness. She lived about 1,700 years ago on the Italian island of Sicily. According to legend, Lucia gave all her riches to the poor. She was persecuted and killed by the Romans because of her Christian beliefs. Her saint's day is December 13. On this day, not long before the shortest day of the year, people celebrate light and look forward to Christmas.
A Swedish girl wears a head-dress of shining candles, celebrating light on St. Lucia's day.
