Why do people make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?

| A cook preparing pancakes | Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, a 40-day period of fasting before the Christian celebration of Easter. Traditionally, people did not eat eggs or fat during Lent. Making pancakes was a good way of using up these foods before Lent started.
