What does 'Halloween' mean?
|
'Halloween' is a shortening of All Hallows Eve, or 'the day before the feast of All Saints'. All Saints' Day, on November 1, commemorates all people who have been honoured as Christian saints. It is followed by All Souls Day, which commemorates all other Christian people who have died. Before Christianity, people believed that the souls of the dead visited their homes at this time. This is the origin of Halloween ghosts and witches. | Children 'Trick or Treating' |
