Moscow, Russia's capital, lies on the Moskva River, from which it takes its name. It was founded in 1147, and nine years later a Russian prince built a wooden stockade or fort, called a Kremlin, there. In 1712 Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg, but the Communists made Moscow the capital again in 1918, when the Kremlin became the seat of the Soviet government.
