What joins North and South America?
|
A narrow strip of land, called an isthmus, forms the southern tip of the continent of North America. This region is known as Central America. It stretches from the southern border of Mexico to Colombia. The narrowest part of the isthmus is in Panama, where at one point only 36 miles (58 km) of land separate the Caribbean Sea from the Pacific Ocean. | Although the isthmus is narrow, it is extremely mountainous. The highest peak in Panama is Chiriquì, at 3,478 metres. |
