How do ships pass from the Atlantic to the Pacific?
Today most ships use the Panama Canal to sail between the world's two largest oceans. This man-made waterway was opened in 1914. It is 50 miles (81 km) long, but is no longer wide enough for some of the world's biggest ships to pass through. Before the canal was built, ships had to sail around Cape Horn, the stormy southern tip of South America.
Cape Horn was named by Dutch explorer Willem Schouten in 1616, after his hometown, of Hoorn.
