What is metamorphosis?
If an animal changes shape at some stage in its life, turning from one sort of creature into another, then we call this metamorphosis. Many amphibians, such as the frog, go through metamorphosis. When a baby frog is born it has a strong tail for swimming and gills that let it breathe underwater. We call it a tadpole. As it grows older the tadpole gradually develops legs - first two, then a full set of four. Eventually it loses its tail and gills and becomes a fully formed frog.
