What is scent marking?
Some animals use powerful smells to mark tree bark, twigs, or even the ground, and this is known as scent marking. Scent marks are sometimes used to show the boundaries of a territory or to attract a mate. Animals that scent mark are often nocturnal or live in habitats with dense vegetation, where visual signals cannot easily be seen.
