Which birds are used as symbols?
The owl has been used to symbolise wisdom since the time of the ancient Greeks. Eagles symbolise strength and courage. The bald eagle is the symbol of the United States of America, while a two-headed eagle was used by the Hapsburg emperors to show they ruled two powerful kingdoms: Austria and Hungary. The beautiful quetzal bird is the national symbol of Guatemala, the Central American country where it lives.
The striking male quetzal bird was believed to be sacred by the Aztecs in the 16th century.
