Why do other birds raise cuckoo chicks?
|
Cuckoos do not build their own nests. A female will find another bird's nest, wait for the parents to be absent, then dart in to lay her own egg then leave. First, though, she removes one of the original eggs. When the cuckoo chick hatches, it pushes any other eggs and chicks out of the nest. Its bright red mouth acts as a stimulus to the foster parents to feed it constantly. As soon as the cuckoo can fly, it leaves its foster parents forever. | A female cuckoo removes an egg from another bird's nest before laying her own egg in the nest. |
