Why do some birds have bright, showy feathers?
Many birds have large or brightly coloured feathers that are used to signal to other birds. Perhaps the most attractive feathers are those of the bird of paradise from New Guinea. The colourful display feathers are used to attract females at nesting time or to frighten away rival males.
