Are the world's deserts getting larger?
|
The land around the world's deserts receives little rainfall. As a result, the poor soil has little vegetation, and this is heavily grazed by animals. With the vegetation removed, the land suffers soil erosion and becomes desert itself. Unless steps are taken to halt this process, called desertification, the world's deserts could double in size within a century or so. | This map shows the extent of the world's deserts today and how they might increase. |
