When did the dodo become extinct?
The dodo was a large, flightless bird that lived on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It thrived until human settlers came to the island in the 16th century and used the dodo as a convenient source of food. Not surprisingly, it became more and more scarce. The bird finally became extinct in 1680, its disappearance giving rise to the expression 'dead as a dodo.'
