What is conservation?
Many plants and animals are threatened by human activities such as hunting and habitat destruction. In an attempt to keep populations of these species healthy, many people help protect both the creatures and the environment. This is called conservation. Methods used by conservationists are varied and include such activities as habitat protection and restoration, and guarding nests of rare birds. Without conservation, many species would soon become extinct.
The koala suffers from habitat loss; the kakapo parrot is killed by humans, cats, and rats; and the manatee is threatened by hunting.
