What is oil pollution?
Most people in developed countries of the world use oil or oil products such as petrol. These cause pollution when burned, but oil can also damage the environment when it is spilled at sea. Huge oil tankers transport millions of gallons of oil, and if the ship hits a rock the oil spills out into the sea. Oil pollution is harmful in many ways. When seabirds get coated in oil they soon die, and dolphins, fish, and other marine life also suffer. Life on the seashore is destroyed when the oil gets washed on to a beach, and creatures on the sea bed die if the oil sinks.
In 1989 the Exxon Valdez lost 11 million gallons of oil off the coast of Alaska. This polluted 1,056 miles (1,700 km) of coastline and caused an environmental disaster.
