Why did dinosaurs have tails?
Scientists used to think that dinosaurs were sluggish and slow moving. In old-fashioned pictures dinosaurs are often shown leaning back on their tails or dragging them along the ground. Nowadays we think that dinosaurs were active and fast-moving creatures. We think that they held their tails up off the ground, stretched out behind them, to help them balance as they walked or ran along. Some museums have changed the way their dinosaur skeletons are mounted to show this.
A running dinosaur uses its tail to balance as it chases a giant insect.
