How is the soil aerated?

Air containing oxygen needs to be present in the soil so that plant roots can produce energy and grow. One of the main ways by which air penetrates deep into the soil is by the activity of creatures such as moles and earthworms. Smaller creatures such as mites help to break the soil into even smaller particles.
