What is evolution?
If you could travel back into the distant past, you would find that the animals and plants looked different from how they do today. This is because living things change gradually, over millions of years, to survive in the changing world around them. We call this evolution. For example, the original horse was a small creature with toes on its feet. As marshlands turned into plains, it evolved longer legs and hardened hooves.
Over millions of years the horse has evolved from a small animal with toes into a big animal with hooves.
