Can an animal evolve an extra limb?
|
 | Some monkeys can use their muscular tail as an extra limb. | Evolution cannot make an animal suddenly produce an extra limb. It can only modify what already exists to make it do a different job. When birds evolved from dinosaurs they did not acquire a pair of wings in addition to their original four legs. Their front legs had gradually to evolve into wings. The tails of some monkeys have evolved to become prehensile; they can be used to grip branches the way their hands can.
