How are fossils formed?
Many prehistoric organisms have been preserved by a process known as fossilisation.
Many prehistoric organisms have been preserved by a process known as fossilisation.
When an animal dies its body is usually eaten or it decays. In some rare cases, when the animal dies in very dry conditions or underwater, this does not happen. Instead, the body of the animal is swiftly covered by sand or mud. Over the years this piles up and is compressed to rock. Deep beneath the rock the bones of the animal absorb minerals and harden to become a fossil.
