Why did ancient elephants have fur?
The ancient elephant, or woolly mammoth, was a huge creature that could stand up to 4.5 metres high at the shoulder. The mammoth was an animal of the Ice Age, over 30,000 years ago, when the world was much colder than it is today. Its thick coat of fur helped to keep it warm. Mammoths have been found deep-frozen in the ice fields of Siberia, in Russia, with their fur, and even the food in their stomachs, still preserved.
The largest mammoths had tusks over 5 metres long.
