What were the first land animals?
Three hundred million years ago there were no animals living on land. Insects and their relatives were probably the first to occupy the new world beyond the sea. The first four-legged creatures to explore beyond the shoreline were ancient amphibians. We think that these evolved from creatures such as lungfish, which could survive out of the water for a while.
