What were the first forests like?
Two hundred and fifty million years ago the Earth was covered by the first forests. The trees were not like the trees of today. There were giant ferns and palm-like plants, but no flowers. No squirrels climbed the trees. No birds perched in their branches. These forests were ruled by giant scorpions and huge centipedes. Dragonflies with 0.5 metre wingspans buzzed through the warm, wet air.
