What types of fossil are there?
Sea animals are the most likely to be fossilised and, since it is the hard parts of an organism that are usually preserved, the most common fossils are those of seashells. Many other types of fossil can be found however, including fossil wood, fossil dinosaur droppings, and the faint fossil imprints of leaves or soft-bodied creatures such as jellyfish. Insects are often found preserved in amber, the hardened sap of prehistoric trees.
Many different types of organism have been preserved as fossils.
