Why do praying mantis pray?
Praying mantis are fierce predators. When waiting for prey they keep their forelegs folded back close to their body in a position that resembles a person praying. If a mantis spots an insect it creeps slowly toward its victim. When the insect is in range, the mantis shoots out its front legs and grabs it. Sharp spines and barbs on the inner edge of the legs help secure the struggling prey, which the mantis then eats at its leisure.
This praying mantis has just spotted its next victim.
