Why do male rhinoceros beetles have horns?
|
Rhinoceros beetles are large insects that live in the forests of Southeast Asia. Males are larger than females and may reach 16 cm in length. The species takes its name from the long horns on the heads of the males. The horns are used when two rivals fight for the right to mate with a female. The horns often lock together and are sometimes used to turn an opponent on to its back. The strongest beetle with the longest horns usually wins the contest.
