How does the male spider court his mate?
Most male spiders are considerably smaller than females of the same species. Courtship is a dangerous process for the male because he must make sure the female recognises him as a potential mate and not a meal. He takes great care to advertise his arrival at her web by vibrating the silk at a special frequency. If he is successful, he can then approach her and mate. If not, he will probably be eaten.
A male orb web spider carefully courts the much larger female.
