Which is the largest land mammal?
The African elephant is the largest land mammal alive today. A bull elephant can grow up to 3.5 metres high at the shoulder. Even a baby elephant is nearly 1 metre high when it is born. The mother elephant is pregnant for almost two years while the baby is growing inside her. In the prehistoric past, there lived even larger land mammals that may have weighed up to two or three times as much as an elephant. All of these are now extinct.
The African elephant can weigh up to 6 tons.
