How long have goats been kept as domestic animals?
Goats have been kept as domestic animals for more than 9,000 years. They are important mainly for their milk, but goat meat, wool, and skin can be used as well. Goats are particularly suited to stony, dry ground and can survive in areas where there is little rainfall. Goats were probably first domesticated in the Middle East, and their wild ancestors still live in parts of Europe and Asia.
The Nubian goat is particularly popular in North America.
