Why are pigs important in poor countries?
Pigs are extremely useful animals to keep in poor countries because they will eat almost anything edible. They can be fed with scraps from the kitchen, but will happily forage for themselves and eat plants and roots. Pigs are kept mainly for their meat, but almost every part of the animal can be used: The skin can be made into leather, the bristles make brushes, and the fat can be used for cooking.
Nearly 800 million pigs are kept throughout the world.
