What are cones for?
|
| A cone from a conifer | Cones are the reproductive structures found on conifer trees. Male cones produce pollen, which is carried by the wind to fertilise the female cones. After the female cones have been fertilised, they become bigger and produce seeds. Each seed is protected by one of the scales that make up the cone. There may be a hundred or more seeds in a single cone.
